Ukraine peace talks: Pope suggests Vatican as meeting place

talks in Istanbul

Peace talks in Ukraine could take place in the Vatican - Pope Leo XIV wants to make the Holy See available to host both sides in an attempt to end the war, the Italian newspaper La Stampa notes.

"All this is tragic because we hoped that a process, perhaps a slow one, could begin that would lead to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, but instead we are back to square one. Now we will see what can be done, but the situation is very complex, dramatic. The Pope is ready, if necessary, to offer the Vatican, the Holy See, as a place for a direct meeting between the two sides," Vatican Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin said on the sidelines of an event dedicated to the talks in Istanbul.

Recall that on Saturday, May 10, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said at a press conference following the meeting of the "Coalition of the Willing" that Ukraine, European countries, and the United States had agreed to begin a full and unconditional ceasefire starting May 12. It should last at least 30 days.

Trump's special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, also stated that a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire would be the beginning of the end of Russia's war against Ukraine.
