European leaders who joined US President Donald Trump in a phone call were stunned by the way he described the agreements reached with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin. According to a source familiar with the talks, it became clear that the American leader was not going to increase pressure on the Kremlin leader to force him to seriously negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine.

This was reported by the Financial Times, noting that after a two-hour phone call with Putin, Trump said: Russia and Ukraine will "immediately" begin discussions on a ceasefire and a peace agreement. At the same time, he emphasized that the US would not participate in the negotiations as a mediator, leaving the parties to independently negotiate the terms of the settlement.

Putin described his conversation with Trump as “very frank and very useful,” but did not make any new commitments. According to him, the memorandum should contain the principles and timeframe for a possible peace agreement, as well as conditions for a temporary cessation of hostilities.

At the same time, he stressed that Russia continues to insist on its “key demands,” in particular, “eliminating the root causes of the conflict.” Last week, Russian negotiators set a condition for Kyiv - the withdrawal of troops from a number of Ukrainian territories, including Kherson and Zaporizhia, threatening to expand the occupation if it refused.
