Political Analyst Assessed Whether a Truce with Russia Is Possible: "Only If the U.S...."

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik discussed whether it is possible to agree on a truce with Russia during the third round of peace talks, and what role the U.S. and the EU play in this process, according to Politeka.
He spoke about this in his blog.
According to the expert, everything is actually ready for the third round of negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. The parties have fulfilled the agreements of the second round—there was an exchange of prisoners and bodies—but Trump got distracted by Iran. The question now, he notes, is what the next round of negotiations can even be about.
"Agreeing on new exchanges is possible, but reaching a full and absolute ceasefire is only possible if the U.S. lifts part of the sanctions against Moscow. Achieving a full peace is not possible at this stage," Ruslan Bortnik states.
He also notes that a peace agreement is impossible without Europe, and Brussels is categorically opposed—in fact, it keeps introducing new sanctions against Russia. Moreover, concessions regarding sanctions from the U.S., the expert says, would look like a defeat, because bringing Moscow back onto the international stage in exchange for a possible ceasefire is not an equal deal.
"And as soon as the U.S. starts making concessions to Russia, Europe will begin to fall apart. Individual countries in Europe will start shouting: 'Stop! These sanctions are hitting us hard. The U.S. has already normalized relations and is profiting with Moscow, and we’re the fools? Are we idiots?' That’s the tangled web of interests. So my highest expectations are just an attempt to agree on some kind of truce—if the U.S. is ready. But most likely, the next round of negotiations will be empty. Bringing political positions closer will be extremely difficult," Ruslan Bortnik asserts.
