“A New Deadline Is Already Being Set”: Expert Reveals How Long the Russia–Ukraine War Will Last

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnyk explained that the Ukrainian–Russian track is approaching a dead end, so the Ukrainian leadership hopes to end the war by the end of Trump’s presidency, reports Politeka. He shared this on his blog.

As the expert notes, both in Ukraine and in the West people are already openly saying that peace in the near future is extremely unlikely. In fact, President Zelensky himself hinted at this, adding that it would be good to secure peace by the end of Trump’s term, which runs until January 20, 2029.

“In other words, no one is talking anymore about trying to finish the war this year or by autumn. Remember such statements were being made at the beginning of the year? Now a new deadline is being set—January 20, 2029. That’s roughly how the Ukrainian team is assessing the prospects for a possible end to the war,” Ruslan Bortnyk states.

He goes on to say that Zelensky responded to the Kremlin’s constant attempts to delegitimize the Ukrainian authorities by reminding everyone that Putin has already exceeded three presidential terms under the Russian Constitution. Overall, the expert argues, the Ukrainian–Russian track seems gradually to be sliding toward a dead end. According to Bortnyk, unless there is a dramatic turning point that changes each side’s positions and capabilities, the war will drag on for a long time.

“To be honest, I don’t think the war will continue at its current intensity until 2029. After all, it is consuming enormous resources. I believe that both Ukraine and its allies, and Russia with its backers, have already expended the bulk of their resources. They won’t be able to sustain another three to four years of conflict at this level of intensity. There will have to be either a sharp escalation or a reduction in intensity. But for some period—say, another year—high-intensity warfare could continue,” Ruslan Bortnyk asserts.
