"Trump Summoned Putin to the Carpet": Expert Comments on Possible Meeting

Donald Trump

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman discussed whether Putin will agree to a meeting with Trump in Istanbul and whether this negotiation could bring a victory for Ukraine, Politeka reports.

He shared his thoughts in his blog.

"Trump said he's planning to meet with Putin. More precisely, Trump summoned Putin to the carpet—literally—because he called him to Istanbul, and Istanbul is famous for its carpets. It was Trump who asked Erdogan to pass on the message to Putin: ‘Come over, I'll be there,’" Sheitelman emphasized.

So, he notes, a new and significant meeting in Istanbul is on the horizon. Although Putin hasn’t yet responded, the fact that Trump will be there makes it likely he’ll agree. The expert admits it will be difficult for Trump, but he might try to secure a victory for Ukraine during these talks—just as he did for Israel. Though it may seem unlikely, there is still hope.

Meanwhile, Sheitelman remarks, the State Duma of the Russian Federation has proposed tighter control over traveling circuses. He finds this strange, considering Russia is an ancient state that has existed for a full 34 years, and during all that time, Russian traveling circuses have roamed the world unchecked. In his opinion, there could only be one reason for this: the renewed activity of Medinsky’s traveling circus, which is apparently preparing for another tour in Istanbul.

“This is in the works, as Erdogan announced. He said that Trump is planning to meet with Putin in Istanbul—more precisely, that he wants to summon Putin there. And Erdogan immediately stated that he is preparing a third round of negotiations between Ukraine and Russia. I don’t know what this round will be about, but Medinsky’s traveling circus will once again arrive in Istanbul, and indeed, tighter control over it would be quite appropriate,” Sheitelman concluded.
