Trump Changes Strategy and May Finally Give the “Green Light” to Sanctions Against Russia: Expert Opinion

Donald Trump, Putin

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that, in addition to Lindsey Graham’s bill, U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent may join the game with his own sanctions against Russia, according to Politeka.
He shared these insights in his blog.

“American media are reporting a potential change in strategy regarding how to proceed further. This especially concerns Trump. The key question is whether he will be decisive in giving the green light to lawmakers so they can vote for a bill imposing strong sanctions against Russia and everyone supporting the Kremlin in this war,” Musiienko noted.

However, he adds, Western media report that Trump wants to retain the ability to impose and lift sanctions through executive orders, giving him more maneuverability and less dependence on Congress. According to the expert, this is not ideal, since lifting sanctions via a Congressional vote is much more difficult—it requires justification and convincing both chambers that the move is necessary at that time.

The British outlet The Telegraph, he says, also reports that the U.S. is considering more than just Lindsey Graham’s bill, as Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent may introduce his own sanctions. According to the expert, Trump, recognizing the resilience of the Russian economy despite sanctions, may use Bessent—a talented Wall Street professional skilled in identifying and exploiting vulnerabilities in the economies of adversarial nations.

“A new strategy to pressure Russia will be developed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Trump wants to leverage his talents, which already proved effective in the trade war with China. Bessent, known for his unconventional strategies and Wall Street experience, may become a key figure in Washington’s new policy,” Musiienko emphasized.
