Putin’s “Air Truce”: Expert Explains Whether It’s a Step Toward Peace or Another Illusion

Donald Trump, Putin

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko commented on Bloomberg’s report that Putin will propose an air truce in order to avoid Trump’s sanctions, Politeka reports.
He spoke about it on his blog.

"Indeed, this idea might be voiced — it will be thrown out there to create the impression that Russia is supposedly ready to negotiate, ready to talk, but in reality, they will continue to maintain the illusion of a peace process. That is, they will say: ‘We made a proposal, we’re not rejecting negotiations’... But remember what happened with the energy truce. Will it be the same here? Russia will start blaming others — claiming that something isn’t being honored, something isn’t happening," said Oleksandr Musiienko.

In his opinion, such a limited ceasefire — only in the air — on the one hand, offers a small chance for a broader ground truce and, of course, aims to stop the missile and drone attacks with which Russia terrorizes Ukrainian cities.

On the other hand, the expert explains, it would restrict Ukraine from carrying out strikes deep into Russian territory and from conducting operations behind enemy lines — areas in which Ukraine has recently been very successful. In other words, he concludes, no matter how much the Russian authorities try to appear strong, the consistent deep strikes and sabotage missions are having a negative impact on Russia, so they now want to strip Ukraine of this advantage.

"I have a feeling that this is just another smokescreen — a way to find Trump’s weak spot, something Putin has done repeatedly, trying to exploit the situation and create the illusion of a negotiation process. To say: ‘Look, I’m not against negotiations, just delay the sanctions for a month or two, give me until the end of the year.’ That’s the main message Putin is sending, both behind closed doors and through public channels. It’s his main appeal to Trump: give me time, at least until the end of the year, so I can try to change the situation on the battlefield in my favor," Musiienko said.
