Putin Has Lost His Levers of Influence: Expert Explains How Russia Is Taking Revenge on the South Caucasus

Putin

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musiyenko explained that Russia deliberately attacked an oil depot in Ukraine as a signal to Azerbaijan and the entire South Caucasus that Putin is losing influence, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this in his blog.

"This is not the first time, and I believe it’s far from accidental. Putin is acting quite deliberately as revenge against Azerbaijan for what’s happening — for the fact that Azerbaijan did not withdraw its lawsuit against Russia regarding the Azerbaijani aircraft that was shot down by a Russian air defense missile at the end of 2024. I also want to remind you of the repression and persecution faced by the Azerbaijani community in Russia," Musiyenko stated.

What infuriates Putin even more, the expert emphasizes, is that he has lost his influence in the South Caucasus — he no longer has sway over the events in either Yerevan or Baku. Unfortunately, Musiyenko notes, Putin still maintains influence in Tbilisi for now, but there is hope that the Georgian people will push back against the Russian puppets, because freedom and will are far more valuable than the money Putin uses to buy loyalty.

"Armenia is moving toward the West, drawing closer to the EU, and traditionally aligning with Paris, where there is a strong Armenian diaspora. Azerbaijan is also following its own path. Putin has lost his levers of influence, and it’s driving him mad. He’s furious because Russia is no longer managing the situation — it no longer controls or decides when Azerbaijan and Armenia should go to war and when they shouldn’t," Musiyenko explains.

According to the expert, Azerbaijan must now respond appropriately — by deepening and strengthening its cooperation with Ukraine, distancing itself as much as possible from Russia, and eradicating all potential pro-Russian influences within its own country.
