Economy and the Front Against Putin: Expert Explains Why Russian Forces Won’t Take Donetsk Region

Putin

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that Russian forces will not be able to capture the Donetsk region due to the resistance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and the collapse of Russia’s own economy, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in his blog.

According to the expert, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have changed the situation in Novomykhailivka and pushed the enemy back in Zelenyi Hai in Donetsk region. Meanwhile, the enemy continues attempts to advance in Kharkiv and Donetsk regions, with fierce fighting ongoing. At the same time, he notes, it’s evident that Putin is being presented with false reports by his commanders, which is why he still expects to capture the Donetsk region by the end of the year, despite the lack of significant progress.

“Why won’t that happen by the end of the year? Because the 2026 budget is different. It will likely end with an increasing deficit, because the National Welfare Fund continues to be depleted. It’s not bottomless, and revenues aren’t rising significantly,” Musiienko says.

He adds that, according to The Telegraph, the Kremlin fears ending the war due to the risk of a social crisis — many people profit from the war and don’t care about the losses. Russians are receiving signing bonuses for military contracts, and many are employed in the defense sector. However, the expert points out, a social collapse in Russia is inevitable. For example, on August 25, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Novak convened oil industry leaders to address the fuel market crisis: in Crimea, gasoline is being rationed with coupons; across Russia, there are long lines; and on the Kuril Islands, there is no fuel at all. Additionally, gasoline prices on the wholesale exchange have reached a record 82 rubles, which is driving up the cost of other goods and services.

“At the same time, we clearly understand who is contributing to this. It’s the long arm of Ukraine’s defense industry, the long arm of our deep strikes, our Unmanned Systems Forces, Special Operations Forces, Defense Intelligence (HUR), and the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), which are systematically carrying out missions targeting military facilities on Russian territory. And we’re seeing the results,” Musiienko concludes.
