“Time is pressing on Trump”: expert explains who will pay the price if no peace deal is reached

International political scientist Maksym Yali explained that Trump’s administration still believes in Putin’s willingness to end the war, and therefore will shift all responsibility for the failure of peace talks onto Ukraine, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in his blog.
“Frankly speaking, it’s a somewhat depressing impression. I watched the full interview this morning, and the main conclusion is that Witkoff (and therefore Trump, since he is his ear in the Kremlin) is still convinced that Putin really wants to stop the war. He even said: ‘An honest offer.’ That’s more or less how it sounded; I watched it in English,” Yali noted.

In other words, the expert explains, the White House for some reason still believes that the Kremlin has made concessions and is ready to end the war. Accordingly, the positive outcome of peace talks depends entirely on Ukraine — whether Kyiv accepts the proposal and is ready to compromise. Witkoff, in the interview, of course, did not specify what compromises he was referring to, but it is understood that this means the withdrawal of the Ukrainian Armed Forces from the non-occupied part of Donbas. The expert adds that it is good that Trump’s administration is already talking about security guarantees, even if without specifics, since this shows they understand why Ukraine will not agree to anything without guarantees.

He also noted that Witkoff will hold his first private meeting with representatives of the Ukrainian government regarding the negotiations, since previously they only communicated in a multilateral format, such as in Saudi Arabia. In the interview, the expert reminds, Trump’s special envoy confirmed that behind-the-scenes negotiations with Moscow have been ongoing all along. That is precisely what he will tell us about — including the compromises and concessions discussed with the Kremlin.

“Time is pressing on Trump. The countdown has begun; the prize will not appear by itself. That is why they are speeding up, and of course, the pressure on Ukraine will only increase. This is another conclusion from this interview,” Yali summarized.
