The EU is lagging behind the US in terms of sanctions policy against Russia and its allies: expert opinion

Europe

Political expert and military officer Oleksandr Musiienko stated that we will see true Western unity when the EU imposes secondary sanctions against Russia, and the US introduces tariffs on China, Politeka reports.
He shared this in his blog.

According to the expert, this week EU foreign ministers will meet in Copenhagen to discuss the possibility of introducing secondary sanctions under a mechanism adopted back in 2023, which has not been used even once.
“During this time, Russia has already had countless ways and opportunities to bypass existing sanctions – secondary, tertiary, and others – through third countries, creating networks of companies, firms, entire chains that allowed Putin to continue sustaining his aggressive machine. And why has this not been implemented since 2023? Let’s be honest, it needs to be done,” commented Oleksandr Musiienko.

As for the US, he noted, there has been progress – Trump raised tariffs on India up to 50% because it continues to purchase Russian oil. According to the expert, these tariffs are the highest in Asia; the duties will affect more than 55% of goods supplied to the US, India’s largest market, and will hurt labor-intensive industries such as textiles and jewelry production. However, he added, key export products such as electronics and pharmaceuticals are exempt from tariffs.

“This is a signal, first of all, to India that it must at least reduce the volume of oil products purchased from Russia, as well as stop buying weapons and equipment from Putin. And it is also a signal to other countries that, following India’s example, want to deepen some kind of cooperation and interaction with Russia. It will be interesting to see how Trump acts toward China, since China also buys many rare-earth minerals, metals, and oil from Russia. Will there be a similar approach to that taken with India? We’ll see after the SCO, because after BRICS Trump began introducing additional restrictions against the member countries of this organization,” reflected Oleksandr Musiienko.
