"China Keeps the World Guessing": Expert Explains Why the SCO Didn't Mention the Russia–Ukraine War

China

Political analyst and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko has explained why there was no mention of the Russia–Ukraine war in the final statement of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, and what China is waiting for, according to Politeka.

He shared his views in a recent blog post.

"What about Ukraine—why wasn’t it mentioned? I believe China is keeping the intrigue alive, especially with the U.S. and the West. Let's not forget that meetings between U.S. and Chinese government and financial circles regarding future trade cooperation and political engagement are taking place on a regular basis.

So expecting China to say something specific about the war in this declaration is unrealistic—they are keeping the world guessing," Musiienko notes.

However, the expert asserts that it’s now clear that China's diplomatic efforts have failed, since no one is talking anymore about their original 12-point or revised 6-point peace plans for resolving the Russia–Ukraine war. And yet, he recalls, it was all launched with great ceremony: special envoy Li Hui traveled across Global South countries to consolidate support for China’s peace initiative—but ultimately, it was all in vain.

"That’s really all you need to know about China’s diplomatic efforts. I don’t think they were trying to create an illusion at the time—they probably genuinely wanted to present themselves as an alternative to the U.S. and to raise China’s international status, especially in the realm of conflict resolution. But that’s over now. China has taken a wait-and-see approach—waiting to see what the U.S. will do," Musiienko explains.

Meanwhile, the expert notes, an interview aired on Fox News with U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessant, in which he said that after the Anchorage meeting, Putin has intensified the bombing of Ukraine. As a result, there's been no progress, and the U.S. is now considering various options, including tough sanctions.

However, Musiienko adds, “We’ve heard this before—so it’s time to move from talk to action and actually implement those sanctions.”
