“Europe feels unsafe”: expert explains why right-wing elites are gaining popularity

Europe

Political scientist Ruslan Bortnyk explained that Europe is helping Ukraine to fight, but not to achieve peace. At the same time, right-wing elites are becoming more popular — and they are even ready to make deals with Moscow, Politeka reports.
He shared this in his blog.

“Europe is indeed helping Ukraine, though perhaps not as fully as we would like. Because the financial aid is huge, millions of refugees have been accepted, and the military support is enormous. Thanks to Europe for this, but in addition, we would like Europe to have its own peace plan, to help end the war and contribute to creating new balances,” Ruslan Bortnyk noted.

In addition, the expert adds, it would be desirable for Europe to have its own plan for Ukraine’s reconstruction, because after the war ends, Ukraine will need massive investments just to restore basic infrastructure for people’s lives. For now, he observes, it seems that Europe is acting in only one dimension, but its role should be more multifaceted.

At the same time, the expert points out, there is now demand in Europe for right-wing elites. This is because Europe does not feel safe, and the blame lies partly with the liberal elites, who kept saying that Russia was about to attack. The right-wing, he explains, represent strength — a strong hand capable of responding to the demand for security.

“Europe feels unsafe. That is precisely why Germany and Britain signed a defense treaty despite NATO. It seems they are showing distrust toward NATO. France and Britain are doing the same. France and Germany are doing the same. In other words, Europe is splitting into groups of countries, into small alliances, each trying to guarantee its own security. And the more elites talk about danger, the more popular the right-wing becomes, because they are better at answering the questions of what to do and how to defend: super-patriotism, no more migrants, rearmament, and even making deals with Moscow if it means greater security,” Ruslan Bortnyk concluded.
