"The Real Negotiation Track Has Narrowed Down Significantly": Expert Assesses Whether Trump's Strategy Has Borne Fruit

Donald Trump, war in Ukraine

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that Trump is not on anyone’s side—he regularly puts pressure on Ukraine, Europe, and Russia—but the key point is that the negotiations have been reduced to just two main issues, Politeka reports.

He discussed this in his blog.

In the expert’s opinion, there’s no need to pay too much attention to all the media buzz and loud headlines—such as those from Politico claiming that Trump has finally aligned with Europe and that they are all now united behind Ukraine, or to other reports suggesting that Trump is criticizing Ukraine and Europe and pulling away from the process.

“Trump's overall strategy hasn’t changed at all in recent months. This strategy—which the U.S. Vice President has again emphasized—remains the same: to simultaneously pressure the Russians, Ukrainians, and Europeans to bring them to the table and strike a deal. Since simultaneous pressure doesn't work, Trump applies pressure one by one—to one side, then another—while each party’s media (European, Russian, and Ukrainian) picks the narrative that suits them and broadcasts only that into the public space. But last week, Vance emphasized that the real negotiation track has significantly narrowed—essentially down to two specific issues,” Bortnik explains.

According to Vice President Vance, Bortnik says, the first issue is territorial—Russians are demanding 6,000 km² of territory they don’t currently control. The second is security guarantees for Ukraine, to ensure that the Russians don’t return with war a few months later.

“The main obstacle to negotiations right now is that the U.S., Ukraine, and Europe cannot agree on a framework for Ukraine’s security guarantees. And since there is currently no agreed framework, there is nothing to put on the table in front of Putin in order to demand concessions from him or negotiate on that basis. Meanwhile, Europe is insisting that these security guarantees include continued pressure on Moscow—continuing sanctions—and that’s something that’s extremely frustrating to Trump,” Bortnik claims.
