Oil Prices Once Brought Down the USSR: Expert Explains Whether the Same Could Happen to Russia

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko assessed Trump’s plan to push Russia toward negotiations and peace by triggering a drop in oil prices. He noted that the Ukrainian Armed Forces are already working in this direction, according to Politeka.

He discussed this in his blog.

“There could be a comprehensive strategy aimed at significantly lowering oil prices. Something similar, by the way, was proposed by U.S. President Reagan at the time to contain the Soviet Union, which ultimately led to the USSR disappearing from the world map. Oil prices were one of the tools. Although, back then, the USSR was stronger than today's Russia, and it took more time for the overall strategy to work,” said Oleksandr Musiienko.

In this context, he notes, the interests of the U.S. and Ukraine align. According to the expert, Ukrainian drones are striking Russian oil refineries, reducing the Kremlin's capacity in the oil refining sector. While this may not lead to an immediate crash in oil prices, it does hinder Russia’s refining capabilities and reshapes the market, increasing the U.S. share.

“If we add to this the possibility that America could work with its OPEC+ partners—particularly the oil monarchies of the Middle East—to increase oil production, which would inevitably drive prices down, then this strategy could work,” Musiienko states.

He also recalls that Trump, in an interview, mentioned not only oil prices but also the ability to produce petroleum products—precisely what the Ukrainian Armed Forces are targeting by striking Russian refineries. That’s why, the expert argues, Ukraine and the U.S. now have a great opportunity to deepen their communication. It’s important to show Trump that while some European countries continue to buy Russian energy, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are imposing "hellish sanctions" on Russia by diminishing the Kremlin's oil refining capacity.
