"Europe is not ready to accept the Trump model": Expert assesses whether Ukraine, the EU, and the US can agree on security guarantees

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik spoke about the upcoming meeting between Trump and Zelensky at the UN General Assembly, the risks of its failure, and whether Ukraine's partners will finally agree on security guarantees, Politeka reports.
He shared his thoughts in his blog.

Ahead of the UN General Assembly, the expert notes, Zelensky broadly criticized Trump’s approach, saying that Putin received too much during the Alaska talks, and that the US needs to clarify its position. According to Bortnik, their meeting will focus specifically on security guarantees, and the main question for Trump will be whether the US will provide air cover for European peacekeeping forces in Ukraine and supply weapons not just in packages, but based on a signed nomenclature.

“That’s what they’ll be discussing — weapons supplies, air cover, training, maintaining intelligence sharing, early missile warning systems, and a few other elements. But I have a feeling that this round of negotiations may end unsuccessfully. Because, on the one hand, Trump will say: ‘Look, I told Europe not to buy Russian oil and to impose sanctions on India and China. You didn’t do it. So what the hell are you demanding from me?’” Bortnik explains.

On the other hand, he continues, Ukraine and Europe will ask the US to guarantee their security, again emphasizing — as Kaja Kallas and Ursula von der Leyen do — that they will develop their own security models, that Moscow should not be listened to, and that agreements should be signed.

“It’s like the blind meeting the deaf in a very bad mood. The strategies don’t align — and I’m not even talking about Russia yet. Talks with Russia will come at a second stage. For now, no one inside our allied bloc is ready to make serious compromises with each other. Europe is not ready to accept Trump’s model. Trump is not ready to go along with what Europe is trying to draw him into. What Europe is offering is not enough for Ukraine, and what Trump is offering is also insufficient,” Bortnik concludes.
