Qingdao Port to Close to Russian Tankers: Expert Explains How the US Convinced China

Oil prices rise

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko has stated that the United States has likely persuaded China to put pressure on Putin, beginning with Beijing’s move to block Russia’s shadow fleet from its ports, according to Politeka.

He shared this in his blog.

As Bloomberg reports, Musiienko notes, China is taking action against Russia’s shadow fleet. Starting from November 1, the port of Qingdao will no longer accept tankers older than 31 years, ships with invalid certificates, or vessels that have altered their registration data in the International Maritime Organization—tactics frequently used by Russian ships to bypass sanctions.

“These measures are specifically aimed at the shadow fleets of Russia, Iran, and other sanctioned states. Old vessels pose risks to the environment and to global markets. And this is yet another example of how international pressure and restrictions are gradually shrinking Russia’s room to maneuver around sanctions. Of course, it’s just one port—only one-sixth of oil product imports go through it—but still, wouldn’t you agree that this might be a signal?” Musiienko comments.

Ultimately, he states, the United States is in ongoing talks with its Chinese counterparts, during which various issues are discussed, including, possibly, how China should participate in sanctions and prevent Russia from circumventing them. After all, the expert emphasizes, the matter is on the scales: whom will China side with—continue trading with America and Europe, or keep supporting Putin?

“China hasn’t fully changed its policy yet. Let me say right away: this shouldn’t be interpreted as a major strategic pivot by the PRC, but there are definitely some signals. And they are, of course, quite negative and unpleasant for the Kremlin—and for us, that’s ultimately a good thing,” Musiienko concludes.
