Political Strategist Assesses Whether China Can Stop the Russia-Ukraine War: "There Is No Other Track Left"

China

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman stated that Trump will likely try to end the Russia-Ukraine war through China, because only Xi has leverage over Putin, Politeka reports.

He discussed this on the program Dialogues with Ruslan Bortnik.

According to the expert, even Trump has finally realized that the issue of the Russia-Ukraine war needs to be resolved through China. He explains: just as Trump could, by halting aid deliveries, persuade Ukraine to agree to an unconditional ceasefire in three days, Xi could also persuade Putin to stop the war in three days by cutting off all his supplies.

In general, the expert explains, Trump initially ran for president with the goal of building a long-term system of relations between the U.S. and China — at least for the next decade. Tariffs didn't work, so he now needs to find a new approach to negotiate a broader deal.

“Trump has decided to negotiate directly with Xi not just about the Russia-Ukraine war, but to make the war part of a larger overall deal. I believe that’s where his next steps are headed,” Mikhail Sheitelman asserts.

As for the war itself, he speculates it will continue with intense fighting but little change along the front lines. Russia's economy, the expert notes, is in decline — a fact acknowledged even by Russians themselves — while Ukraine's economy will depend on European funding.

“Whether the war stops, in my view — strange as it may sound — will depend solely on the relationship between Trump and Xi. That’s it, there’s no other track left; everyone has already tried everything. There’s no other way to stop Putin — he simply won’t agree. Of course, we’re not considering the scenario in which he dies — that would just be ‘lucky.’ But if we’re talking politically, not physiologically, then only Xi can stop this war, and only Trump can make a deal with him to do it,” Sheitelman concludes.
