Political strategist explains why Trump really wants to meet with Putin in Budapest: “There’s a goal behind the talks”

Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman has explained why Trump agreed to delegation-level negotiations and a meeting with Putin — whether he’s been deceived again or has a plan of his own, Politeka reports.
He shared his thoughts in a blog post.
“What is Trump even hoping for? That Putin said one thing in Alaska and will say something else in Budapest? October 16 marks exactly two months since the Alaska meeting. What has Putin done for peace in that time? Destroyed our gas infrastructure? Was that for peace? Brought the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant to the brink of explosion? Sky News is reporting that there might even be a ceasefire in the Zaporizhzhia region because of the risk of a nuclear disaster. That’s what Putin has done for peace in that time. And Trump sees this — he’s not a complete fool, I think,” Sheitelman emphasized.
At the same time, he noted, it’s curious how Putin even plans to get to Budapest — he needs to fly into Hungary somehow without ending up in The Hague, which is quite a challenge with NATO and EU countries all around. According to the expert, there are two possible routes: one — through the Druzhba oil pipeline, in the best traditions of Russian soldiers; the other — through the Caucasus, Turkey, the Adriatic Sea, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and into Serbia, from where it would be easy to enter Hungary.
On the other hand, he reflects, Budapest might just be symbolic, since what's confirmed for now is a meeting between delegations led by Rubio and, presumably, Lavrov. The outcome of their negotiations will determine whether a Trump–Putin meeting happens at all — otherwise, there would be nothing to talk about.
“And if you noticed, besides Trump’s post, there was also a statement from the White House saying that Trump believes it’s possible to bring Putin and Zelensky to the negotiating table. So the goal of Rubio’s working group talks with the Russians is to organize negotiations that include Zelensky. I think Trump will only go to Budapest if Zelensky is going to be there too,” Sheitelman concludes.
