A Ceasefire Requires a Plan So That We Don’t End Up With a Leaky Border With Russia Again: Expert’s Opinion

war in Ukraine

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that simply halting fire is not an option — the front line runs through towns and villages. Therefore, Ukraine and its partners are developing a plan, Politeka reports.

He discussed this in his blog.

“Axios writes that after the meeting between Presidents Trump and Zelensky, UK Prime Minister Starmer proposed putting forward a peace initiative modeled after the U.S. plan for the Gaza Strip. Zelensky discussed this issue with Starmer and other European leaders last week. He told them that the situations in Gaza and Ukraine are different, but the president is ready to work on it,” said Oleksandr Musiienko.

He also recalled a Bloomberg publication from last week, which stated that a step-by-step ceasefire plan is indeed being developed. European leaders, in general, have called on Trump to draft such a plan similar to that for Gaza. And according to Zelensky, the expert adds, such a plan should be short, without too many details, and it could be ready within 7–10 days — meaning that some points might already appear in the media next week.

“In general, a ceasefire is not just about stopping and not shooting. There’s a whole set of provisions: control of the contact line, where exactly it runs, in which particular areas. Sometimes the front line runs right through a village or a small town that is being fought over. Remember how we effectively didn’t have a properly demarcated and defined state border with Russia? Some villages were located on both Ukrainian and Russian territory, with the border running right along the streets. That’s why every detail needs to be worked out and written down so that there are no questions later,” Musiienko explained.

Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Sybiga, he noted, announced that U.S. senior officials have been invited to visit Ukraine — including an invitation for Witkoff. According to the expert, after the recent failed visit of Dmytriiev to the U.S., it is very important to invite an American delegation to Ukraine — in particular, to jointly work on the ceasefire plan and to familiarize themselves with the situation on the ground.
