Trump–Xi Meeting: Expert Explains Whether the U.S. Can Persuade China to Pressure Russia

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained that China would agree to pressure Russia into pursuing peace in Ukraine only in exchange for Taiwan — something the United States cannot do, since that would destabilize the entire region, Politeka reports.

He discussed this in his blog.

“The key player for Russia in this situation remains China. China is increasing its purchases of Russian energy resources. And as long as China sees the U.S. and the West as adversaries that threaten its development, Russia faces no strategic crisis,” Bortnik stated.

The expert also noted that in the sanctions standoff with China, the U.S. has, for the first time, backed down. Despite all its efforts and tough rhetoric, Washington has proven unable to compel another country to act in a certain way.

As for the upcoming meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, Bortnik pointed out that it primarily concerns U.S.–China relations. Trade agreements are possible, but their implementation remains uncertain. However, he added, Trump will certainly raise other issues — particularly Ukraine — while Xi will bring up Taiwan, and there the talks will hit a wall.

“Of course, if the U.S. reaches an agreement with China and if China tells Russia it’s time to stop, Russia will have to stop. But I don’t see the logic or the balance of power that would allow this. I don’t see what the U.S. could offer China to make it take such steps — except giving up Taiwan. But if the U.S. surrenders Taiwan, it unleashes the Tiger’s hands, allowing China to become fully independent and to completely control its maritime trade. The whole region would collapse. After Taiwan falls, the Philippines would follow, and all U.S. investments in the region would crumble. That’s practically impossible,” Bortnik explained.
