Sanctions, Funding for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and Russia’s Offensive: Expert Says Western Media Give Overly Pessimistic Forecasts

war in Ukraine

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that Western media are largely mistaken about the Russo-Ukrainian war, and some materials may even be commissioned by the Kremlin, Politeka reports.
He discussed this in his blog.

“Articles have started to appear in Western media. The German outlet Bild began writing that this winter will be very difficult for Ukraine. And a British journalist wrote a rather pessimistic piece in The Times. The article was published under the headline ‘Kyiv Won’t Survive Until Spring.’ It’s a debatable situation. Similar headlines appeared in 2022, 2023, and 2024. But here, there’s also criticism — including of Europe and the West,” noted Oleksandr Musiienko.

According to the expert, it is, of course, an opinion column, and it’s unclear whether the Russians commissioned it, since Roger Boyes also criticizes the EU for not yet transferring frozen Russian assets to Ukraine. Because of this delay, Ukraine currently has funding for the war only until the end of the first quarter of 2026.
He also noted that the article claims the Kremlin is preparing to turn this winter into a real hell for Ukrainians: Russian forces are trying to break through the fortress belt in the East, have already been seen near Pokrovsk, and the overall goal of the enemy is to open the way for a new offensive in the spring.

“I doubt that the Russians will open the way and advance. That’s my opinion. They don’t have the capability. And the journalist takes a skeptical view of U.S. sanctions against Lukoil and Rosneft, saying they don’t change the course of the war. Well, they haven’t yet — that’s true, and I agree with that. First, they will only take effect on November 21. Until then, we see that Putin is not stopping his terror; he’s trying to seize the entire Donetsk region — at least Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad — where very heavy fighting continues. That’s the enemy’s goal. But I don’t really agree that things are going so well for Russia, or that they’ll be able to break through. No, I don’t foresee the Kremlin pushing further along the left bank, as Roger Boyes predicts,” commented Oleksandr Musiienko.

However, he acknowledged that one can indeed agree that European bureaucracy is delaying the decision regarding €150 billion in Russian assets — funds that could be used to buy American weapons for Ukraine. Still, there is time: the EU may make a decision in December.
