Trigger a collapse in the Russian economy: expert says the US sanctions toolkit is not exhausted

Sanctions

Political expert and military officer Oleksandr Musiyenko said that Russia negotiated only to avoid US sanctions, there is no peace, so it’s time to hit the Russian economy harder, Politeka reports.

He said this in his blog.

“With regard to whether Russia seeks peace or not, the deputy foreign minister of Ukraine, Serhii Kyslytsya, lifted the curtain on part of the negotiation mystery when he told The Times of London that peace talks with Russia have been definitively halted. The talks that took place in May–July of this year were actually only a charade to fool the Americans, Kyslytsya says. Well, that’s clear, and I have said this repeatedly,” Oleksandr Musiyenko notes.

According to Kyslytsya, the expert continues, the three rounds of talks in Istanbul on May 16, June 2 and July 23 produced no progress because the Russians denied the very existence of the Ukrainian nation and presented their aggression as a war of one people, while members of the Ukrainian delegation decided to ignore all the Russians’ historical lectures and tried to discuss the substance of the matter — a path to peace. The Russians, he adds, were evasive and only proposed creating working groups in WhatsApp, using their mere existence to fool the Americans into thinking a working process was underway and that no new sanctions were needed; therefore this negotiating process, which was only a charade, has been stopped.

In the meantime, Marco Rubio, the expert notes, spoke about sanctions policy. According to the US secretary of state’s version, he says, Russia is already so sanctioned that there is nothing left to sanction — that is, all work on financial restrictions has already been done.

“But I will say this — secondary, tertiary sanctions, an embargo eventually, as the US has applied. Let’s impose an embargo on Russian oil, after all. And an embargo on other products. In other words, yes. How else? In particular, to provoke economic consequences and collapse in the Russian economy. Not everything has been exhausted yet,” Oleksandr Musiyenko emphasizes.
