Ukraine Insists on Ceasefire While the U.S. Rushes to Discuss a Peace Agreement: Expert Opinion

Donald Trump, war in Ukraine

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that the positions of the U.S. and Ukraine on a peaceful resolution have once again diverged, and it appears that Washington does not fully understand the situation, reports Politeka.

He shared this in his blog.

As the expert notes, The Financial Times wrote the day before that U.S. Secretary of State Rubio and Trump’s special envoy Whitkoff would not attend a meeting in London with Ukrainian and European delegations due to disagreements and differing approaches to peace negotiations, essentially saying there was nothing to talk about.

"The Ukrainian delegation insists that an unconditional ceasefire must be achieved first. But we see that, for some reason, the American delegation is focusing on already discussing the parameters of a peace agreement, jumping ahead," Musiienko noted.

According to the expert, Ukraine's position is absolutely clear, well-argued, consistent, and logical — especially considering that the U.S. itself had previously proposed this sequence of actions. He also reminds us that, as Rubio stated in his interviews, the process requires a step-by-step approach: first, achieving a ceasefire on the front lines, then moving to the negotiation track to discuss the remaining issues, potential parameters of the peace agreement, demands, and conditions of the parties.

"Or is there simply a lack of understanding of the situation and strategy? Unfortunately, that seems to be the case. The U.S. is currently not applying additional pressure or using leverage against Putin, but is instead, it seems, trying to pressure Ukraine through media messages. At least, that is the impression one gets based on the current circumstances," Musiienko concluded.
