“They turned this peace plan into Swiss cheese”: expert explains why Trump was unhappy with the negotiations

Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman explained that at the negotiations in Geneva, the Ukrainian delegation did everything correctly — they said “no” and explained why the peace plan in its current form was unacceptable, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.
As soon as the negotiations in Geneva began, the expert says, Trump immediately wrote an angry post in which he claimed that the war would not have started under different leadership in Ukraine and the United States, and that everything would supposedly be fine with the Russian leadership. He also wrote that during his first term no one even talked about war — apparently forgetting that Russia occupied Crimea and started the war in Donbas in 2014 — and he even put the Ukrainian leadership in quotation marks for not expressing gratitude.
“When the preliminary round ended, Zelenskyy wrote about it, and that’s when Trump’s statement appeared. That means Whitcoff called Trump. Who else could have called him? Not Rubio. Whitcoff called him from Switzerland and said: ‘They told us to get lost with our peace plan.’ Our people in Switzerland first said ‘no’. That’s all. That’s why Trump reacted that way. That’s why he was angry,” Sheitelman explains.
In other words, he states, Trump assumed that his delegation would show ours in Switzerland this 28-point peace plan, and we would start thanking them and asking to sign it as soon as possible. But no, the expert emphasizes: our delegation explained which points were unacceptable for Ukraine, which proposals did not comply with international law, and which decisions neither the president nor the Verkhovna Rada — no one except the Ukrainian people — can make. That is why, he adds, Trump put the Ukrainian leadership in quotation marks and wrote about weak leadership.
“In Switzerland they brought us cheese in a mousetrap. They thought we would take the bait. But we turned this peace plan into Swiss cheese. Swiss — because it’s full of holes. We punched holes in that plan. We simply poked a lot of gaps in it,” Sheitelman stresses.
