“There Are No Strategic Compromises”: Expert Explains Why Whitcoff’s Negotiations with Putin Were Doomed to Fail

Whitcoff’s Negotiations with Putin

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnyk explained that Ukraine and Russia have faced the same issues for 11 years, and until one side agrees to make a strategic compromise, any negotiations will yield no results, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

The problem, the expert explains, is that Whitcoff flew to Putin with a weak hand, since Ukraine did not agree to strategic concessions regarding NATO and territories, while in Miami our delegation and the Americans merely agreed to keep negotiating.

“But if Whitcoff had not gone to Putin, it would have meant admitting defeat or failure of the US-Ukrainian negotiations. In addition, Whitcoff went to Putin to try to coordinate with him the non-conflict blocks of the plan that concern US-Russian relations, or those points that are empty, that have no substance, no ‘fat content’. There are virtual points there, for example, that Ukraine must remain a sovereign state, and similar things,” Ruslan Bortnyk explains.

Moreover, he emphasizes, on the eve of important political decisions in US-Russian relations, Putin traditionally puts on military uniform, convenes a meeting of the General Staff or the Security Council, and talks about real or imagined successes at the front — this time about the capture of Pokrovsk and Vovchansk, the security zone, and so on.

“There are no strategic compromises. Essentially, Ukraine and Russia have not changed their positions since March 2014. Back then the issue was recognizing Crimea and making compromises. Now the territorial issue has significantly expanded due to Russia’s occupation and annexation of other Ukrainian territories. But fundamentally, for 11 years we have been stuck on the same strategic stumbling blocks: NATO, recognition of territories, changes in Ukraine’s internal humanitarian policy, elections. We’re stepping on the same rake. Sometimes, admittedly, we even dance on it,” Ruslan Bortnyk concludes.
