If Europe Wants to Push Through Its Peace Plan, It Must Strengthen Ukraine: Expert’s Opinion

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that no peace plan from Europe would be accepted by the United States, let alone Russia, unless Ukraine becomes significantly strengthened militarily, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this in his blog.

According to the expert, EU Defence Commissioner Kubilius stated that Europe must create its own plan to resolve the Russian-Ukrainian war, because in addition to the U.S. peace plan, there must also be an opportunity to discuss a European initiative.

“This is the situation. But we know that there is no actual European plan. The Trump plan has been taken as a basis. And now it will likely be very difficult to create an alternative that the Americans would accept. Especially — how to force the Russians to accept it? It must be done by military means. That means more pressure through sanctions, giving Ukraine Tomahawks, providing long-range weapons, giving the ability to strike, to destroy, to crush the oil-export terminals in the Black and Baltic Seas, to continue hitting refineries and military facilities on Russian territory,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.

According to the expert, this is possible only by bringing the war onto the enemy’s territory, by strengthening Ukraine’s capabilities, and by increasing sanctions pressure. Without this, he notes, it will be extremely difficult to force or persuade Russia into anything.

“The situation remains complicated. It is not simple. A serious struggle is underway. I am not sure that Europeans can now manage to push through any plan of their own — let’s be realistic. But insisting on stronger security guarantees is a fact. Yet for the U.S. to provide security guarantees, Europe must take part in leadership. Europe also has to set an example — at the very least by allocating Russian assets to us, at the very least by supplying weapons, at the very least by introducing the next, 20th, sanctions package. And by aligning its position with that of the United States regarding security guarantees,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
