“They’re looking for complicated solutions to simple issues”: expert explains how the U.S. is trying to bring Ukraine’s and Russia’s positions closer

Trump

Political scientist Ruslan Bortnik explained that the United States is inventing complex schemes—regarding territories, for example—to make both sides agree, Politeka reports.
He discussed this in his blog.

According to the expert, Trump is a capricious man in terms of fascinations and disappointments, but in reality his statement about Zelensky is a tactic.

“Our president’s strategy is to resolve complex issues in a direct meeting with Trump. That’s another element. Trump, however, tells Zelensky to agree first, and then he will meet with him. Trump doesn’t want to once again hold a one-on-one discussion with Zelensky. He has experience with such one-on-one or team discussions, and not once has he fully achieved his goals in talks with Zelensky. At best it ends in a draw, or nothing comes out of it—like the last meeting about the Tomahawk issue—or it turns into an oral cabinet where everyone is shouting at each other, and the meeting brings joy to no one,” Bortnik explains.

But the whole problem, the expert stresses, is that all the key issues regarding territorial exchange, Ukraine’s accession to the EU and NATO, and security guarantees remain unresolved.

“Do you know what the American delegation is doing now?” he says, quoting one of the participants in the negotiations. “He said the following: ‘They’re looking for complicated solutions to simple issues.’ They’re trying to come up with schemes—territorial exchange, the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, or something else—more complex schemes with international observers, private military companies, American presence, a demilitarized zone… They want to latch onto something, building elaborate mechanisms to solve simple questions, because so far no one is ready to make concessions,” Bortnik concludes.
