Expert explains why Trump started talking about elections in Ukraine: an additional element of pressure

Trump

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiyenko explained that the U.S. had previously sent signals about the need to hold elections, but Trump has begun to undermine the perception that we have democracy, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, Trump stated that it was time to hold elections in Ukraine and accused us of using the war as a reason not to conduct them. However, he notes, it is physically impossible to hold elections during wartime — the necessary conditions must be in place.

“But he does not say that Zelensky should not run. Here, by the way, he is not interfering in the electoral process regarding who should be a candidate, but he is talking about the elections themselves, saying that Zelensky would win. This refutes the narrative that Trump has a personal dislike of Zelensky and that this is the root of all problems. That is not entirely the case here. And, by the way, if under certain security conditions and legal compliance elections were held and Zelensky won, it would only confirm legitimacy and strengthen our positions,” Musiyenko comments.

However, the expert stresses that an even more worrying statement from Trump is that the situation in Ukraine is now reaching the point where it is no longer a democracy. Of course, he notes, Ukraine is not Venezuela — whose president the U.S. is preparing to declare illegitimate — but a narrative is being set, and there are risks that in the future Trump may call the Ukrainian authorities illegitimate as well. The expert explains that this is pressure on Ukraine to make us agree to the U.S. peace plan, and this pressure will continue.

“And here it is worth noting that signals from the U.S. about holding elections were coming earlier as well, but in this particular statement from Trump there are troubling words — that this is no longer a democracy. This is an additional element of pressure that may, in the future, create doubts about the legitimacy of the President of Ukraine. This is dangerous for the entire state,” Oleksandr Musiyenko concludes.
