The window of opportunity will not open before February: expert explains why there will be no progress in negotiations in the near future

Political scientist and international relations expert Maksym Yali explained why essentially nothing is known about the negotiations on the U.S. peace plan and assessed when progress on this track might be possible, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in his blog.

"The lack of results. This is the key reason. And it is clear why. Because the key points—specifically, security guarantees and the withdrawal of Ukrainian troops—are unacceptable for the Ukrainian side. Zelensky officially stated this a few days ago. There had been some developments together with European partners, and they were passed on to the U.S. Usually, such negotiations are conducted behind closed doors. In fact, they have been going on for a long time. Accordingly, when there are no results, there is no information. Similarly, we did not hear any information for several days about what Kushner and Witkoff agreed on during their recent visit to Moscow," Maksym Yali explains.

According to the expert, when the first details of the U.S. peace plan became known, it became clear that no breakthroughs should be expected in the coming months. All the more so, he adds, because Christmas is in a week, then New Year’s, Congress will go on recess, and therefore there will be a certain pause.

"Here I agree more with HUR chief Budanov, who noted that the window of opportunity will not open before February. That is, the U.S. will return from all these holidays, and for Trump it is extremely important that any possible agreements be highlighted in the media and have political consequences," Yali states.

As for forecasts, the expert notes that everything will depend primarily on the situation on the battlefield, and the second important factor is Ukraine’s funding for next year. After all, he emphasizes, there is a $45 billion hole in the budget, the money will last until March, and this is also an argument against us in the negotiations. Therefore, it is important that Europe find the necessary funding.
