“The last and decisive battle”: expert assesses who will win the fight over the peace plan

Trump

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman said that Trump has an unfavorable backdrop for pressuring Ukraine and forcing it into concessions, since the majority of Americans support continuing military aid, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

As the expert notes, the talks in Berlin once again took place without Rubio, as well as without Driscoll — who had been considered a rising star but, as he put it, “burned up in the dense layers of the atmosphere.” Remaining in the negotiation process, he says, are the unsinkable Witkoff, as well as Kushner, because he is Trump’s son-in-law — family, after all.

“Pay attention to how curious the level of this meeting is. Previously, Umerov met with Witkoff and Kushner — advisers meeting advisers, everything as it should be. But here, the president of Ukraine and the chancellor of Germany are meeting with some U.S. president’s son-in-law. And this is no coincidence. I think this really is our last and decisive battle — not in the war as a whole, of course. It is our last decisive battle regarding the 28-point peace plan,” Mikhail Sheitelman reasons.

And even if you look at the photos from Berlin, the expert notes, you see Zelensky and Witkoff standing there, shaking hands, with Merz — the chancellor of Europe’s largest economy — and Kushner, Trump’s son-in-law, behind them. In his view, at these talks it was Ukraine and Europe that were shaping Europe’s future, rather than representatives of the United States.

“What is the backdrop to all this right now? And the backdrop for Trump in these negotiations is not the most pleasant, because we have today’s fresh polling statistics. The number of Americans supporting arms supplies to Ukraine has risen to a record high, despite Trump’s rapprochement with Putin. A majority of Americans favor military support for Ukraine. Sixty-four percent support supplying weapons to Ukraine, according to a survey conducted by the Ronald Reagan Institute. And as you can guess, the Ronald Reagan Institute is a Republican institute,” Mikhail Sheitelman concludes.
