Forums, Democracy, Consensus: Expert Explains Why the EU Is Ineffective in Times of War

Europe

Political technologist Mikhail Sheitelman stated that Russian spies can, in fact, disrupt any EU decision regarding Ukraine, since any decision in the EU requires unanimous approval, as reported by Politeka. He discussed this in his blog.

As The Guardian wrote, the expert explains that Russian intelligence has organized a campaign to intimidate Belgian politicians and leaders of Euroclear to block the use of frozen Russian assets. Specifically, the CEO of the depository received threats. According to him, this is indeed alarming because Russia can already dictate EU decisions in this way.

“The EU system, built after World War II, is designed for peacetime, not wartime. Period. It works for peacetime but not for wartime. In peacetime, getting unanimous decisions from 27 countries is quite effective. In peacetime, that’s how it works. But in wartime, we need one person who gets full authority to protect the EU from its enemies,” says Mikhail Sheitelman.

According to the expert, Europe is not ready for war even from a legislative perspective. And this, he emphasizes, is not even a war yet—it’s about espionage tactics, and no one can take responsibility even now. For example, the expert argues, if Ursula von der Leyen could make decisions for the entire EU alone, we would already be living in a different world. She would have long ago, in the name of revolution, confiscated Russian assets for the benefit of Ukraine.

“Now imagine that tomorrow, Europe is truly attacked. If the Russians really attack. Europe would still be stuck with the same system—another forum, more unanimous decisions. And Orban has already taken money, so he’s against it. The Prime Minister of Luxembourg had his favorite Mercedes stolen and was told: ‘We’ll burn it if you vote for resisting Russian military aggression.’ And that’s it. That’s what we’re facing. This is the reality. A reality of bandits roaming across Europe,” concludes Mikhail Sheitelman.
