New Challenges of the War of Attrition: Expert Warns About the Risks of Depopulation in Frontline Territories

Political expert and military serviceman Oleksandr Musienko stated that along the border and the front line, a demilitarized zone might emerge due to depopulation and security risks, as reported by Politeka.

He shared this in his blog.

As the expert points out, the war of attrition is a very serious matter, and various factors must be taken into account, including social and demographic ones. According to him, there is an unpleasant piece of news: Oleksandr Gladun, Deputy Director of the Demography Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, has warned about the threat of large uninhabited territories appearing. The expert explains that the depopulation process in the villages of northern Sumy and Chernihiv regions, which started before 2022, has now become irreversible due to constant shelling.

"Even if the war freezes along the border and the line of demarcation, a sanitary zone at least 30 kilometers wide will form, where civilian habitation will be impossible due to mining and other security risks. This is quite an unfavorable trend of village depopulation. We know this was happening before, but unfortunately, we are now facing a kind of self-created demilitarized zone because there are no people, or very few of them. The wild nature will take over," says Oleksandr Musienko.

Thus, the expert concludes, the question arises of what will happen to these territories, who will settle them, who will manage the land, and as a result, the demographic situation is complex. He also notes that demographers predict the concentration of people in large cities, such as Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, and Dnipro.

"Depopulation of the periphery will create a risk of territorial erosion, where huge areas of the country will be practically without human control. Will we create reserves, national parks, or what? This is a very serious question. It is all about demographics and the challenges of the war of attrition. We must think about this too," sums up Oleksandr Musienko.
