“It will be harder for us”: expert explains why Europe and the U.S. fighting over Greenland is not beneficial for Ukraine

Trump

Political analyst and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko said that Europe’s delays regarding Ukraine and Russia have led to a situation in which the United States is imposing tariffs and wants to take Greenland, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

As the New York Times writes, the expert says, a trade war between the U.S. and Europe over Greenland could affect support for Ukraine, since by summer tariffs will rise to at least 40%, harming the European economy.

“This would mean that the EU would be able to purchase fewer weapons for Ukraine’s needs; in practice there would be fewer opportunities. In addition, the overall deterioration of relations will have a negative impact. Attention will now shift to Greenland, although I continue to emphasize that Europe’s security begins in Ukraine. If Europe had not shown weakness toward Russia. If troops were being sent not to Greenland but to Ukraine now… And this should have been done long ago, because the logic of the conflict shows that this is exactly how it should have been — European troops should have appeared in Ukraine. If that were done now, there would be no Greenland issue either,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.

Thus, he notes, Europe is preparing to respond to the tariffs, but both Trump and Putin consider it weak. Against the backdrop of Trump’s claims, the expert points out, autonomist sentiments in Greenland may intensify; there are strong pro-independence feelings there, and they may want to separate from Denmark. Therefore, he explains, in order to negotiate directly with the U.S. over its presence on the island, Denmark as a mediator is not needed — especially since it is unknown whether European troops are actually ready to fight for Greenland.

“Trump has indeed set his sights on Greenland. All attention is focused there now; the situation looks tense between Europeans and the U.S., which is definitely not in our favor, because without preserving transatlantic unity it will be harder for us. But again, European countries themselves are largely to blame for this situation, because they did not give Putin the response he deserved. The Coalition of the Willing has still not sent its troops to Ukraine — and it should have; that would have been a sign that Europe is united, that Europe is strong,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
