World Economic Forum: Expert Says Whether Progress in the Peace Process Should Be Expected

Trump

Political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko explained that Davos coincides with the anniversary of Trump’s presidency, so his goal is fame and another victory story—though it is unlikely to be Ukraine.

He said this on the program “Dialogues” with Ruslan Bortnik.

As the guest of the program recalls, just a week ago there was talk that investment agreements were to be signed in Davos, but now this topic has somehow died down—especially since the Trump “swings” have once again tilted toward blaming Zelensky for the absence of a peace agreement. Nevertheless, he notes, in Davos there will be attempts to reach an understanding with Trump regarding Ukraine, as well as Greenland.

“But Trump’s trip to Davos is precisely the anniversary of his presidency. Trump wants to gain glory, for everyone to recognize him. And a lot will depend on the reception he receives in Davos, on how he feels and perceives it. If he encounters criticism there and a not very positive background for himself, this may provoke a negative reaction from him. But if he suddenly receives his share of glory, compliments, many interviews, and the respect he seeks, then perhaps this positive background will play a favorable role,” Volodymyr Fesenko explains.

Nevertheless, the expert argues that one should not expect any new agreements, breakthroughs, or changes in relations between Ukraine and the United States. In general, he notes, progress on the peace track now depends on Russia’s position; therefore, it is rather worth waiting for trips by Kushner and Witkoff to Moscow, to see how ready Russia is for any substantive negotiations.

“And with Trump, I think the story right now is that he is riding high after Venezuela and wants more, but Ukraine cannot become a new success story. It will be either Greenland or Iran—but clearly not Ukraine,” Volodymyr Fesenko emphasizes.
