Putin’s Middle Eastern epic: an expert explains how quickly the Kremlin is losing allies

Putin

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko said that Russia’s former allies in the Caucasus and the Middle East are now drawing closer to the West or issuing ultimatums to the Kremlin, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

As the expert notes, on January 28 the President of Syria is expected to meet with Putin, but this comes against the backdrop of Russia’s withdrawal from the Al-Qamishli military airfield in northern Syria. According to him, the Russians had used this airfield for a long time to conduct operations in Syria, but the situation changed after government forces entered territories that had previously been controlled by the Kurdish alliance, the Syrian Democratic Forces.

“Russia is being pushed out of Syria and confronted with clear demands in the form of an ultimatum. Even Syria, even Damascus. Imagine if Washington were acting more forcefully right now and issued an ultimatum to the Kremlin. Well, an ultimatum has been issued: hand over Assad for trial or get out of Syria, remove your military bases and don’t even dream of restoring them or increasing your military presence. This is absolutely the right approach to reducing influence and squeezing Russia out,” Oleksandr Musiienko says.

According to the expert, Putin reads history very selectively, because if he knew it well, he would not repeat the mistakes of the USSR, which ultimately led to its collapse. The Soviet Union, he recalls, repeatedly pushed into the Middle East, helped Syria and Egypt, and tried to establish contacts—but all of this ended in nothing.

“The same is happening now: the Middle Eastern epic is ending badly for Putin. That’s a fact. If the regime in Iran were to fall now, Russia would lose yet another ally and more influence. Russia has already lost its influence over Azerbaijan and Armenia. Armenia is trying to move toward the West, toward closer ties with the EU. And Trump openly said in Davos that it was thanks to the United States that Armenia and Azerbaijan were reconciled. Russia had nothing to do with it—no one even mentions it, nor the so-called Russian ‘peacekeepers.’ And there is nothing Putin can change in this situation,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
