“The negotiations have reached some kind of peak”: expert assesses why Russia is once again issuing threats

Putin

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik explained why Medvedev has begun personally threatening Zelenskyy amid peace negotiations.

He spoke about this on his blog.

“My European colleagues told me that Russia has now begun actively promoting, behind the scenes at the expert and political level, the thesis that Zelenskyy will be replaced and will soon lose power. And this is reflected in Medvedev’s statements. But I want to say that Moscow has been pushing this thesis for the 20th or 25th time during the course of the war. From time to time, this thesis starts being promoted as wishful thinking, as yet another hope,” Ruslan Bortnik explains.

Now, he notes, a new wave of promotion of this idea has begun, but from the standpoint of politics and inertia there are no grounds for it. Nevertheless, the expert points out, Russian elites really like such talk; they are inspired by it, which is why Medvedev writes such posts, reinforcing the trend of removing the President of Ukraine from power.

He also says that Medvedev stated that Putin cannot rule out delivering a nuclear strike — in other words, he once again pulled out that flag. In general, the expert argues, whenever a decisive moment in negotiations and behind-the-scenes friction arrives, Russia starts lying about capturing cities and, of course, threatens nuclear weapons. However, no such strike is currently being prepared; the probability is not high, although it cannot be ruled out in the future as a way to break Ukraine’s will to resist.

“But all of this together indicates that the negotiations have indeed reached some kind of peak. Not for the first time, and probably not for the tenth time during the war, but once again they have come to a certain peak. Russia is trying to appear as strong as possible, as frightening as possible, and to demonstrate its maximum successes, while portraying Ukraine as as weak as possible,” Ruslan Bortnik concludes.
