The Druzhba Oil Pipeline Story: Expert Says the EU Is Joining the Pressure on Ukraine

Oil Pipeline

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko stated that the EU’s demand for Ukraine to repair the Druzhba pipeline, which was destroyed by Russia, constitutes completely unfair pressure, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, the United Kingdom has introduced its most powerful package of sanctions since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, but has not yet imposed any restrictions on the Druzhba pipeline. That is, he notes, Hungary and Slovakia are still allowed to pump Russian oil, while the EU is demanding that Ukraine speed up repairs to the pipeline so that Viktor Orbán will calm down.

“There will be compromises in favor of the Hungarian government, which, unfortunately, is not the first time. Therefore, all the talk that the EU will block Hungary is, unfortunately, just talk. So far, they are effectively making compromises and telling us to repair the Druzhba pipeline. But the Russians destroyed it — tell that to Vladimir Putin. Ultimately, let Hungary and Slovakia send their repair crews, and we will assess the damage,” explains Oleksandr Musiienko.

Thus, the expert concludes, there are clear signs that Ukraine is effectively facing pressure, although this is completely unfair under the current circumstances, raising the question of whether the EU is entirely sincere in its intentions.

“The EU will propose a full ban on imports of Russian oil after the elections in Hungary. This is a compromise option designed to prevent Orbán from claiming interference in the elections. The proposal to ban Russian oil will be put forward on April 15, three days after the parliamentary elections in Hungary. EU officials have told Reuters that this date was chosen to ensure that the ban does not become the main factor in Hungary’s election campaign. They are also still considering whether the ban should be full or partial,” Oleksandr Musiienko says.
