Hungary Detained Ukrainian Cash-in-Transit Guards: Expert Assesses Whether It’s Time to Repair the “Druzhba” Oil Pipeline

Oil Pipeline

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that in the situation with Hungary and the repair of the Druzhba oil pipeline, Ukraine should act pragmatically, especially since Trump stands behind Orbán, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in his blog.

According to the expert, cash-in-transit guards from Oschadbank were transporting $40 million, €30 million, and gold from Austria to Ukraine, but they were detained in Hungary. He said that it is still necessary to determine what the money was intended for, but overall the situation indicates a deterioration in relations between Ukraine and Hungary.

“Would you agree to repair the Druzhba oil pipeline and have €90 billion, and in addition also obtain the 20th package of sanctions against Russia? If we approach this purely pragmatically, we would actually gain more than we would lose. We risk losing more. What if Orbán wins? What if Magyar wins and says he wants to pump Russian oil through the Druzhba pipeline? If so, what then? We are playing a very risky game,” Oleksandr Musiienko comments.

According to the expert, there are very, very gambling-type people who walk on thin ice. And no matter how much we might want to, he notes, we will not be able to break the whole world, so sometimes we must turn on realism and pragmatism and think about whether we will lose more or gain more.

“The EU is ready to repair it—okay, let’s set a price and say: ‘Dear friends, go ahead and repair it, no problem.’ First. Second, we remove all these unjustified ambitions of Orbán and say: ‘Here it is.’ Although again, if the United States stands behind Orbán, there will always be tricks. There will be constant pressure on us through Hungary, possibly through other countries. In other words, this is pressure aimed at making us more consistent in negotiations, to push us toward certain compromises, and so on. But we simply need to think and weigh it. Sometimes the choice is between bad and very bad. And something has to be chosen—obviously, it is better if it is not the very bad option,” Oleksandr Musiienko explains.
