An analogue of Israel’s “Iron Dome”: expert explains the strengthening of Ukraine’s air defense

Political expert and serviceman Alexander Musienko said that due to the war in the Middle East and the shortage of air-defense missiles, Ukraine will change its approach to counter Russian attacks, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

“Deputy Commander of the Air Force Yelizarov says that Ukraine will have its own air defense system — an analogue of Israel’s ‘Iron Dome,’ but with technical features and innovations. This is what is currently being discussed. The details have not been announced yet, but the innovation and complexity will take into account how the combat operations are continuing. This is actually very important,” Alexander Musienko notes.

According to Yelizarov, he says, Ukraine cannot currently saturate its air defense with missiles for Patriot and IRIS-T systems for obvious reasons. The expert wonders whether IRIS-T systems are protecting the Bundeswehr base in the Middle East that was recently attacked, and whether Germany is able to produce air-defense systems in sufficient quantities even for its own needs. However, it should not be forgotten that Europe’s security begins in Ukraine, because Russian missiles are flying from the East.

“We need to strengthen air defense in conditions where the enemy is changing its approaches to using missiles and drones — these changes have been long overdue. Today,” the expert states, “the Defense Forces face the task of increasing the effectiveness of countering Russian attacks while we also cannot count on such a large number of air-defense missiles.”

“Russia is systematically working to change the way Shahed drones operate. For us, this is a challenge today. Ukraine needs a completely new air-defense system and a new paradigm for protecting soldiers. It should be territorially distributed and layered by altitude and by air-defense means. All useful experience must be accumulated for the purpose of protection, because the enemy continues to attack,” Alexander Musienko concludes.
