“All of this is just for show”: expert assesses whether Orbán’s campaign against Ukraine is boosting his ratings

Orban

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman said that Orbán is only pretending to want to reach an agreement with Ukraine regarding the Druzhba oil pipeline; in reality, he is simply trying to boost his ratings, Politeka reports.
He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, thanks to subversive actions against Ukraine, the abduction of Ukrainian cash-in-transit officers, and the blocking of a €90 billion loan, Orbán has increased his ratings ahead of the elections. Unfortunately, he notes, this is a political technology that works, and Orbán has not lost yet.

“I’m afraid that this month we are seeing the emergence of a third front. Our main front is the Russian-Ukrainian war, the second is the war of Israel and the United States against Iran, and the third front is the political and diplomatic one with Hungary. And Orbán has not backed down even remotely. He hasn’t even really started yet. So if from here it looks like madness, in Hungary many people actually like it. We shouldn’t write Orbán off,” Mikhail Sheitelman reflects.

He also says that Orbán advised his delegation in Ukraine to be polite — saying that civilized people should show that they want to reach an agreement, resolve the situation together, are not seeking conflict, want to help, and so on.

“In other words, Orbán is saying outright that all of this is for show. All the current activity of the Hungarian ‘delegation’ is meant to demonstrate that we tried. In other words, he isn’t giving them a real mandate. If you send a delegation, what instructions do you give them? Go and try to reach an agreement. But he publicly says: ‘Go and make sure everyone sees that we tried to reach an agreement.’ But that doesn’t mean he came to negotiate. It means he came to portray an attempt to negotiate,” Mikhail Sheitelman explains.
