“Putin’s Cunning Outsmarted Himself”: Journalist Describes Where Russia Has Ended Up

Putin

Journalist Arkady Babchenko explained that after spending so long in power, Putin decided to go down in history by gathering lands he considers Russian—thereby turning Russia itself into an international outcast, Politeka reports.

He said this on Valeriy Savchuk’s author program “Different People.”

“After 25 years in power, the guy has completely lost it. He lives in his own world; everything is brought to him neatly in folders, and he really believed that in Ukraine he would be greeted with flowers—that’s why he sent in columns of the National Guard, which ended up burning there quite successfully. This is a KGB-style worldview; he’s too cunning. Putin’s cunning has outsmarted himself,” Babchenko claims.

He argues that if Putin had stopped after 2014, European leaders would now be visiting him on May 9, relations with Russia would have been restored, oil would be purchased, Gazprom would be valued like Microsoft, and the Russian army would be respected—because no one would have seen burning tanks.

“And you would have been the king’s confidant and a grand empress. But no—Putin wanted to become the ruler of the seas, so he took his country and smashed it against a wall. Bon voyage to you, Volodya. Best of luck continuing down this same path,” Babchenko emphasizes.

According to the guest, when it comes to “gathering lands,” Putin is actually sincere with himself—he truly believes that Ukraine left the USSR and must be brought back. He considers Kyiv and Donetsk to be Russian cities; this does not really apply to regions like Hutsulshchyna or Galicia, which he does not understand. The same, he notes, applies to Narva: Putin considers it Russian, and therefore will try to seize it—not in a year, but in three or five—yet he believes it will happen.
