“Soon we will hear the answers”: an expert assessed whether it will be possible to resume negotiations with Russia

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that the negotiation format should be restarted from scratch — with new points, new mediators, and beginning specifically with a ceasefire, Politeka reports. He shared this in his blog.

As President Zelenskyy stated, the expert notes, trilateral talks have been postponed because the United States is focused on the Middle East. The process has not been completely halted, but “we will start from the beginning.” As he emphasizes, the key phrase here is “we will start from the beginning.”

“First, it is unclear when and whether dialogue in a trilateral format will take place. Second, what role the United States will play going forward, if any. Third, if we are ready to start from scratch, perhaps we should expand the circle of mediators or involve new ones. And is it possible to do this in agreement with the United States? Would this mean that Washington will step back from the negotiation format? Perhaps Turkey should be involved if Russia does not want any European country. There is Turkey, and there are other countries with which negotiations can be conducted. After all, the United States and Iran negotiate through Pakistan. Perhaps Finland could be a compromise option,” explains Oleksandr Musiienko.

He also suggests that Ukraine might propose revising the 20-point peace plan, or that Russia could put forward additional conditions — we will learn about this soon. Overall, the expert concludes, formally we are in a negotiation process, but in reality it is on pause, as we see how quickly things move when the parties are interested, as in the Middle East.

“For us now, it is a chance to emphasize that, following the example of Iran and the Middle East, issues of security and a ceasefire must be prioritized, and only then should we move on to further points. Perhaps this is what the President of Ukraine means. Soon we will hear the answers,” Oleksandr Musiienko concludes.
