Competition and democracy: an expert explained why Russian political strategists lost the elections for Orban

Orban

Political strategist Mikhail Sheitelman explained that there are no longer any experienced political strategists in Russia—just as there are no real elections—so it was a mistake for Viktor Orbán to invite them to help against Péter Magyar, Politeka reports. He spoke about this on his blog.

“Have you noticed how Russian political strategists completely embarrassed themselves in Hungary? There was so much talk that Russian strategists had been sent there and now they would… But why should it have worked? Why would Russian political strategists succeed in Hungary? Let’s ask ourselves honestly. There is not a single reason. And where have you even seen Russian political strategists?” Mikhail Sheitelman notes.

As the expert explains, for experienced political strategists to exist, there must be competitive politics, democracy, and real elections—and Russia has none of that. After all, he emphasizes, governors in Russia are not elected but appointed, which is why even with these strategists, Orbán lost. Meanwhile, on Magyar’s side, the expert notes, were Western political strategists accustomed to working in competitive environments.

“Russian political strategists could build a repressive apparatus, but not win elections. And that advertisement featuring Volodymyr Zelenskyy… That was their idea. Why? Because they thought: Zelenskyy is an enemy, everyone in the world hates him—we hate him, so everyone must hate him. They put Zelenskyy in the ad and linked him to Magyar, thinking all Hungarians would vote against him. But it turned out that Zelenskyy is actually a highly respected politician worldwide—everywhere except Russia,” Mikhail Sheitelman explains.

According to him, this was a primitive mistake by people who do not understand what competition or marketing is. Back in the 1990s, the expert concludes, Russia did have political strategists because there were still elections—but now they have all died out like dinosaurs.
