The Druzhba oil pipeline is operating again: an expert assessed whether it was worth restoring

Oil Pipeline

Political expert and serviceman Oleksandr Musiienko explained that, in fact, by restoring the operation of the Druzhba oil pipeline, Ukraine ultimately gained more than Russia, reports Politeka.

He spoke about this on his blog.

“The pipeline is not operating at full capacity, that’s certain. So, you understand, the question is what’s on the scales. We realize that a certain amount of Russian oil will be transported there. But now let’s think about what we need more,” notes Oleksandr Musiienko.

That is, the expert explains, on the one hand, the EU will be able to introduce sanction packages against Russia, allocate aid and a €90 billion loan to Ukraine so that soldiers on the front line receive salaries and the state as a whole avoids economic collapse and a multi-billion budget deficit. On the other hand, he states, Russia will pump its oil, but in reality will not earn that much from it.

“It’s a difficult decision. Sometimes in politics—especially global politics and international relations—you have to make difficult decisions. There is no easy choice. But in the long term, the European Union has now effectively taken a strategic course toward максимально reducing dependence on Russian oil and gas by 2027,” explains Oleksandr Musiienko.

Unfortunately, the expert notes, the war against Iran has once again sparked discussions that perhaps Russia should be allowed back into the market, but this is not the dominant view at the moment. Therefore, he adds, it is necessary to support all initiatives by Turkey and Middle Eastern countries to build alternative gas and oil pipelines in order to finally exclude Russia from selling oil and gas to Europe.
