This could end quite badly: an expert explained the consequences of mobilization for Russia itself

Moscow, Kreml

The coordinator of the “Information Resistance” group, Konstantin Mashovets, assessed whether Putin will go ahead with mobilization and explained what the consequences for Russia itself might be, Politeka reports. He spoke about this on the program “Dialogues” with Ruslan Bortnik.

According to the guest, it depends on whether the next stage of mobilization will, in Russia’s view, help achieve the goals of the war and produce the necessary effect. So far, however, such prerequisites are not evident. He also notes that it is important to understand the scale of mobilization: one thing is 500,000 people, another is 1.5 million. In any case, for the 2026 campaign, mobilization is already late — it should have been carried out in the autumn or winter.

“These are major risks in many respects for the military-political leadership of the Russian Federation. Both in terms of finances, the economy, and resources, as well as in the socio-political sphere,” Konstantin Mashovets emphasizes.

In addition, he notes, it is necessary to consider the impact of removing a significant number of working-age men from the Russian economy, which is already stagnating, with a deficit of 6 trillion — and that is only according to officially understated figures. Moreover, the expert adds, parliamentary elections are scheduled for the autumn, so it is unclear what effect mobilization will have in the socio-political sense.

“In such conditions, carrying out mobilization is like that saying: ‘Cut the last cucumber, and after that, let the grass not grow.’ This could end quite badly in many respects for Russia itself. And for now, I do not see any particular prerequisites that would guarantee that they could mobilize another million people and that this would immediately bring them a final and indisputable victory. There is nothing like that,” Konstantin Mashovets concludes.
