Drone Incursion into Latvia: Expert Assesses the Real Readiness of the Baltic States to Counter Threats

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik commented on the decision of Latvia’s defense minister to resign following drone incursions and explained what this situation actually means, according to Politeka.

He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, what used to be a major geopolitical game for European elites is now turning into a crisis of their own security. He notes that the societies of the Baltic states are increasingly feeling this security crisis, pressure on governments and elites will continue to grow, and the resignation is an attempt to release public tension after drones freely entered the country and struck an oil storage facility — signaling that the elites are responsible and that security must be guaranteed.

“But the problem is that these countries cannot guarantee their own security without external support. The 45th Brigade of the German Armed Forces, one of the most combat-ready units, is stationed in Latvia. Operation ‘Eastern Guardian’ for joint collective defense by European NATO countries is being carried out on the territory of these states. Militarily, these countries are incapable on their own,” explains Ruslan Bortnik.

The demonstration of weakness in such situations, the expert notes, raises questions about the ruling elites, which is why personnel changes of this kind occur. However, this will not affect the real military capabilities of these countries.

“The continuation of the war will sooner or later draw the Baltic states, Finland, Poland, and Romania into military actions. Drones and missiles will undoubtedly continue to enter their territory, and they will have to strengthen their defenses and increase combat readiness,” warns Ruslan Bortnik.
