Lukashenko’s call: expert assesses whether the negotiation process can be revived

Lukashenko

Political expert and serviceman Alexander Musienko explained why Macron called Lukashenko and assessed whether Belarus should even be considered as a mediator in peace negotiations, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this in his blog.

According to the expert, the parties discussed threats coming from Belarus, and Macron emphasized to Lukashenko the risks of Belarus being drawn into the war. In other words, he notes, France is responding appropriately to Ukraine’s position and to Zelensky’s warnings about threats from Belarus, but there may be more behind these contacts.

“Is Macron looking for contacts and a way to reach some kind of negotiating position with Russia through Belarus? And here everything comes together into a single puzzle, a mosaic. Lukashenko came out with a statement that he is supposedly ready to meet with Zelensky on any platform, anywhere, including in Ukraine. This was a signal that Lukashenko might possibly be ready for some negotiations and is willing to act as a mediator,” explains Alexander Musienko.

In France, he notes, these signals were heard, but it should be remembered that Macron also spoke last year about the need for dialogue with Russia and that Europe cannot remain on the sidelines. In addition, the expert adds, over the past few weeks media reports have suggested that Europe is looking for a suitable negotiator and searching for pathways.

“But what is there to talk about? What do you want to talk about? About Russia’s uncompromising conditions? Ukraine does not accept them. So what is the purpose of these negotiations? Negotiations are simply impossible right now. All of them are ruled out. There is no subject for negotiations, except for prisoner exchanges. And we see that these still need to be carried out within the framework of 1000 for 1000. We have only completed the first part of the exchange; the rest still needs to be done, so this is the only point where efforts can be applied,” concludes Alexander Musienko.
