Military Bases Near the NATO Border: Expert Assesses When Russia May Be Preparing for an Invasion

Political analyst Ruslan Bortnik commented on reports that Russia is already building military bases along the NATO border and assessed whether another war is realistically being prepared, Politeka reports.
He discussed the issue on his blog.
According to the expert, there is nothing fundamentally new about this situation. During the Cold War, tensions were much higher, and the map showing these bases is a visualization of a potential threat intended to mobilize European political awareness and justify funding new military efforts. As for the actual scale of the threat, he argues that it is still difficult to determine. However, he believes the publication is designed to alarm the average European citizen and encourage support for redirecting public funds toward the military-industrial complex and the development of armed forces.
“I do not think Russia will be capable of waging war against Europe within the next one or two years. Russia simply does not have the resources for that. Such a war would only be possible in the event of some kind of nuclear apocalypse. But when it comes to the future—particularly around 2030, as Europeans often suggest—there is no clear answer to that question,” Ruslan Bortnik claims.
According to the analyst, the war could indeed end between 2028 and 2030 due to the exhaustion of both sides. Under one possible scenario, Russia could then free up enough resources to pursue a more aggressive military posture toward Europe, though not before then. For now, he describes this as part of a mobilization-focused information policy.
“But military bases are certainly being prepared because the Russian army is increasing in size every year. In trying to counter NATO’s presence in Ukraine, Russia ended up with NATO’s presence in Finland. In fact, Russia’s border with NATO is now longer than its border and frontline with Ukraine. Of course, everyone plans for war—but military organizations are obligated to plan for war,” Ruslan Bortnik emphasizes.
