“There Will Be Flare-Ups, but It’s Like a Headless Chicken”: Expert Assesses Whether Trump Will Turn His Attention to Russia After Iran

Trump

Political strategist Mykhailo Sheitelman explained that Donald Trump is unlikely to return to efforts aimed at resolving the Russian-Ukrainian war after dealing with Iran, especially since peace in the Middle East is far from guaranteed, Politeka reports.

He spoke about this on his blog.

According to the expert, the situation is developing in a rather anecdotal way: Trump is once again convinced that he can make things work with Iran. As Sheitelman notes, the U.S. president announced on social media that a deal had been reached with Iran and also declared the complete tariff-free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, urging people to “start their engines” so that oil could flow freely. However, the expert reminds us that Trump has also spent recent months trying to persuade Netanyahu not to strike Lebanon, while Israel has no intention of withdrawing its forces.

“It seems to me that the peace Trump claims to have brokered is yet another piece of sloppy work. Because tomorrow Hezbollah could fire from Lebanon into Israel, Israel would respond, Iran would respond to Israel’s response, Israel would respond to Iran’s response... I just don’t buy it. And look, when Trump believed he was signing a real peace agreement, he specifically traveled to Israel, went to the Knesset, listened to speeches, then went to Egypt to sign everything. This time he’s not going anywhere. He’s not going to Pakistan, and even Vance isn’t going to Pakistan. Although now there’s yet another version of the story—that they’ll physically sign it in Switzerland. We’ll see,” explained Mykhailo Sheitelman.

He also noted that there is hope Trump will sober up, move on from his focus on the Strait of Hormuz, and then turn his attention to the Russian-Ukrainian war. However, the expert argues that Trump appears to have already lost interest in both Zelenskyy and Putin, as well as in the war itself, and has instead decided to focus on the Middle East because he sees greater political gains there—believing that is where he has a chance to win the Nobel Peace Prize.

“In our war, Trump doesn’t see how he can profit politically. I’m not even talking about money, but about political gain. That’s why I don’t really believe Trump will return to our issue. There will be flare-ups, but it’s like a headless chicken that sometimes keeps running around. Trump will be running around regarding our war in much the same way. As for Putin, history will eventually corner him. It seems to me that during Trump’s term, history itself will be able to bring Putin to account,” said Mykhailo Sheitelman.
